Pet Emergency Preparedness [1]

In anticipation for any emergency, it is wise to prepare an emergency pet care plan and kit.

It is important to think about what your pet(s) needs are, and include these items in an emergency kit. A well prepared emergency kit will help you care for your pet in the event of an emergency, and can be given to a person who may be called into action on short notice if you are no longer able to care for your pet.

You should have your pet’s essentials readily available at all times. What to include in your emergency pet care kit:

  • 30-day supply of medications (if required)

  • 2 weeks supply of food and fresh water

  • First aid kit

  • Leash or Carrier for sudden and secure travel

  • Kitty Litter (if applicable)

  • Emergency contact number (in the event that your pet is being given to temporary caretaker)

  • A container (to allow quick and easy transport of essential supplies and smaller items if necessary)

If you aren’t feeling well but can care for your pet, keep them at home with you. If you are sick with COVID-19, restrict contact with pets, just like you would with people. Have another member of your household take care of your pet. If you have a service animal, or must care for your pet, wear a facemask, and wash your hands before and after any contact with them.

Whether you are sick or not, designate a pet sitter for those ‘just-in-case’ scenarios.
